Crafted for Refinement. Built for Players Who Shape Every Note.
At Melvin Reeds, every reed we make has a purpose.
Some are designed to help developing players find confidence. Others are built for bands that demand consistency, stability, and exceptional tone in every performance.
Today, we're proud to introduce the newest member of the Melvin Reeds family...
The Melvin Elite Reed
The Melvin Elite Reed wasn't created to replace our current reeds.
It was created to give experienced pipers and top-level pipe bands another option when they're looking for the highest level of performance.
Built specifically for Grade 1 and Grade 2 competition, the Elite Reed represents everything we've learned after years of making reeds for some of the world's finest players.

Why We Built It
As bands improve, their expectations change.
The strongest bands aren't simply looking for a reed that works—they're looking for one that responds precisely to the adjustments they make, projects across a competition circle, and maintains a rich, stable sound through changing weather and demanding performances.
That's where the Melvin Elite Reed comes in.
Every feature was chosen with one goal:
To give experienced players the finest starting point possible.
What Makes the Elite Different?
Hand-Selected Cane
Only our best cane is chosen for the Elite Reed. Each piece is selected for consistency, stability, and tonal potential before it ever reaches the workbench.
Rich, Vibrant Tone
The Elite Reed produces a full, vibrant sound with outstanding projection while maintaining the stability serious competitors expect.
Whether you're standing in a Grade 1 competition circle or rehearsing with your band, the goal is the same: A reed that helps your instrument sound its absolute best.
Stronger Playing Strengths
The Elite Reed is available in stronger strengths ranging from 31–42 inches H₂O. These strengths are intended for experienced players who prefer a more powerful setup and the tonal benefits that come with it.
Fuller Tips for Precision Adjustment
One feature we're particularly excited about is the fuller reed tips. Rather than limiting the player, they provide additional material for precise final adjustment, allowing experienced pipers to fine-tune the reed to match their individual instrument and blowing style.
Part of the Melvin Family
The Elite Reed joins our growing family of reeds, each designed for different players and different musical goals.
Whether you're:
Beginning your piping journey,
Playing in a local competition band,
Or competing at the highest international level,
there's now a Melvin Reed designed specifically for your needs. The Elite simply represents the highest-performance member of that family.
Built for Players Who Shape Every Note
The finest instruments deserve the finest reeds.
The Melvin Elite Reed was designed for pipers who understand that great tone doesn't happen by accident—it comes from careful craftsmanship, thoughtful adjustment, and attention to every detail.
If that's how you approach your piping, we think you'll feel right at home with the newest member of the Melvin Reeds family.
