Breaking in a New Reed
Each of our cane chanter reeds is individually hand crafted from natural cane. Because cane is an organic material, every piece varies slightly in density, strength, and flexibility. These natural differences are what give each reed its unique character.
When you receive your reed, you will need to gently introduce a small amount of moisture to help “kickstart” it before playing. This allows the cane to settle and respond properly.
Reed strength is subjective and can feel different from player to player. If the reed you received feels too strong or too easy, browse the videos below for some sound advice to help break-in and adjust your new reed.

These observations come from my own experience playing in Grade 1 bands and from my perspective as a reed maker.
